General Douglass MacArthur played a huge role in America’s reaction to the Bataan Death March. In March 12, 1942 MacArthur was evacuated from the peninsula of Bataan in Corregidor to Australia due to the president’s orders (“World War II in the Philippines: A timeline.”). Right before he left he promised, “I shall return!” Finally in October 1944 general MacArthur lived up to his promise and attacked the southern Philippines occupied by Japan. The Bataan Death March was one of his motives to return. The United States treated Japan with anger nearing the end of WWII and dropped two atomic bombs (Hiroshima and Nagasaki) on Japan (“World War II in the Philippines: A timeline.”). Finally the U.S. requested that Japan surrender unconditionally. The Japanese lost their emperor. In April 3, 1946 Japanese Gen. Masaharu Homma was executed for his carrying through of the Bataan Death March (“Bataan Death March”).
