The Bataan Death March
The mistreatment of American and Filipino soldiers during the infamous Bataan Death March outraged the United States. The soldiers were horribly mistreated and killed on their eighty-mile march to Camp O'Donnell. Soldiers were bayoneted, tied to poles, shot, run over by vehicles, buried alive and beheaded. It seemed that the Japanese inflicting harm upon the American and Filipino soldiers were savages. This mistreatment of POWs outraged the United States and made them want revenge. In so doing, the Bataan Death March partially motivated five-star general Douglas MacArthur to return to the Philippines as promised. This infamous event known as the Bataan Death March amazed the United States.
